The reality is that traveling with pets can get overwhelming with all paperwork, ever-changing rules, and strict regulations, especially if you are planning to fly for the first time. We understand the anxiety involved because we’ve been there – traveling both locally and internationally with Guillermo. Each time is inevitably nerve-wracking even if you think you have all the paperwork you need. ….Based on our understanding, a few of the most pet-friendly airlines include American, Air Canada, Delta, and our go-to, Jetblue. From New York, we’ve flown to Portland, Seattle, and most recently, Ecuador, with our brave travel pup Guillermo. Our experience with Jetblue has been really great and they are definitely one of the most accommodating airlines when it comes to traveling with your pets. Why you ask? Because they have their own pet perks program called JetPaws, which provides you with your very own carrier bag-tag (like a VIP wrist band), tips and tricks for traveling with your pet, and 300 TrueBlue Points on each trip with your best furiend. ..Según nuestro entendimiento, algunas de las aerolíneas que admiten mascotas incluyen American, Air Canada, Delta y nuestro favorito, Jetblue. ….With Jetblue, the pet fee is $125 each way, however, all service, psychiatric and emotional support animals travel for free, which is super awesome. If this applies to you, Jetblue requires you to have a few documents filled out by your vet and mental health professional and uploaded to their system 48 hours before your flight. Forms can be found here and more details on their service animal policies here. Overall, we think that Jetblue is a great option if you’re planning to travel with your dog because everything is really straightforward and their customer service (and pet-friendliness) is superb. Oh and how can we forget to mention, the Jetblue terminal in JFK has the best outdoor pet relief area we’ve ever seen. ….If you’re flying internationally, you will have to do further research into the specific country and their pet policies. Things can get pretty tricky and this is where you have to really stay organized with everything. To fly to Ecuador with Guillermo, we had to coordinate with our vet ahead of time to get specific shots and paperwork completed. Below was the summary from our research and what we had to do (yes in those specific days prior to our flight): ..Si vuelas internacionalmente, tienes que investigar más sobre el país específico y sus políticas sobre mascotas. Las cosas pueden ponerse bastante difíciles y aquí es donde realmente debes mantenerte organizado con todo. Para volar a Ecuador con Guillermo, tuvimos que coordinar con nuestro veterinario con anticipación para completar tomas y documentos específicos. A continuación te mostramos el resumen de todo lo que descubrimos y lo que tuvimos que hacer (y los días específicos antes de nuestro vuelo): ….
….At least 60 days prior to flight - Rabies Shot..Al menos 60 días antes del vuelo: vacuna contra la rabia….

….And most importantly, EXACTLY 10 days prior, Guillermo had to be examined by our USDA accredited vet (pssst. if you are in Brooklyn, we highly recommend One Love Animal Hospital on Atlantic Ave) so that she could fill out this form and sign it. After that’s completed, we had to send that signed document along with a $38 check to Albany to have it endorsed by an APHIS Vet Medical Officer. Once you receive this endorsed document, you are basically good to fly to Ecuador with your dog. If you’re already getting overwhelmed by just reading this, trust us, we get it (it sounds harder than it actually is). But just know that as long as you do your research and plan accordingly, everything will be totally fine. Here is a link to the USDA website that gives you more info on traveling to Ecuador with your pet. ..Y lo más importante, EXACTAMENTE 10 días antes, Guillermo tuvo que ser examinado por nuestro veterinario acreditado por el USDA (pssst. ….Now that you’ve done your research, chosen your airline and booked your flight, the next steps are to prep your pup and gather all your paperwork. First and foremost, we would check that Guillermo’s vaccinations are up-to-date. Once that’s done, the vet would give us signed and stamped copies of his Healthy Certificate and Vaccination Record. In terms of paperwork, the only thing to remember is that if your pet is a service animal, and you’re flying with Jetblue, you will have to submit the filled out documents 48 hours before your flight. (We mentioned this in the “Pet-friendly Airline Options” section above). ..Ahora que investigaste, elegiste tu aerolínea y reservaste el vuelo, los siguientes pasos son preparar a tu cachorro y reunir toda su documentación. En primer lugar, verificamos que todas las vacunas de Guillermo estén actualizadas. ….To prep your pup, we’d really recommend you get him/her use to his carrier bag from Amazon (make sure your carrier is the correct dimension). We would also bring along his favorite toys and treats to make him more comfortable, especially during take-off and landing, when it gets super loud. Another thing that we had to get from the vet was Trazodone, which are basically pills to help Guillermo sleep and stay calm during the flight. ..Para preparar a tu cachorro, te recomendamos que lo acostumbres a estar en su mochilita la puedes encontrar en Amazon (solo asegurate de que tu mochila sea de la dimensión correcta). También te recomendamos que lleves sus juguetes y golosinas favoritas para que esté más cómodo, especialmente durante el despegue y el aterrizaje, cuando hace mucho ruido. Otra cosa que tuvimos que obtener del veterinario fue Trazodone, que son básicamente píldoras para ayudar a Guillermo a dormir y mantener la calma durante el vuelo. ….

….The best advice on the day of the flight is to give your dog a longer than normal walk, extra exercise, and extra playtime if possible. This will tire him/her out for the trip and they will more likely nap during the flight. Of course, make sure you have all of fido’s paperwork organized into a single folder to make it easier to present them to the agent. Lastly, we would take Guillermo to the pet relief area for one final peepee break right before boarding. ..El mejor consejo que te podemos dar para el día del vuelo es que le des a tu perro una caminata más larga de lo normal, ejercicio adicional y tiempo de juego adicional si es posible. Esto lo cansará para el viaje y es más probable que duerma la siesta durante el vuelo. Por supuesto, asegúrate de tener todo el papeleo de tu mejor amigo bien organizado en una sola carpeta para que sea más fácil presentarlos al agente. Por último, nosotros siempre llevamos a Guillermo al área de alivio de mascotas para un descanso final y que haga pipí justo antes de abordar. ….
